Magnus and his Swedish girls!

This is the story about Magnus Peter Jensen and Hanna Nilsdotter, who – in spite of many skeletons in the closet – found each other and stayed together until their deaths. Both wanted to try their luck in Ålborg far away from home, and I will try to tell the story of their meetings as simple as possible.

Hanna Nilsdotter

In 1844, the Swedish couple Nils Olsson and Ingar Persdotter married in Vånga in Kristianstad Län. In the following 12 years, they had six children including Hanna in 1848. The family had a close bond with a father, who leased a farm nearby, but as it was in Scandinavia in that time, the everyday life was hard, and if you did not own your own place, the security did not exist for her. Hanna therefore knew – like her siblings – that she had to find a job as soon as she was old enough. She did, which resulted in the birth of her daughter Karna in 1867 just three days before her 19 years old birthday in Vånga. The father was a shoemaker in the parish, but that is all I know about him. Karna was an accident. Hanna felt, that she had disappointed the family now that she had to leave her illegitimate daughter with the parents living under hardship already. Hanna felt like taking a chance and trying her luck. Perhaps the family had already discussed the many possibilities in America. Hanna took a drastic decision: she would leave her one-year-old daughter and the entire family and network – all on her own.

America was in the first place a very long journey, to the choice fell on Denmark. Many Swedes, however, also end up more or less willingly in Denmark during the trip to the US, if the money ran out fast, but I figure that Hanna chose on her own to become one of the many Swedish milkmaids or maids in Denmark from 1840’s and then on due to the unemployment rates in Sweden. Often they were very young. The men found work as stonemasons and brick factory workers. It must have been far from an easy immigration for Hanna in 1868, and she must have had other expectations than what the reality showed out to be. She was given, but the Swedes were given a lower salary, the hardest work and the worst conditions. Socially they were very exposed, since they were without a network to help with pregnancies, abuse or violence. Hanna cannot have known all that and knew only one thing: In Denmark, you could work. She arrived to the country in 1868, I assume, since she disappears from Sweden, but she is not on the lists of emigrants, which indicates that she was an illegal worker. This made her rights none existing. Not before 1873 does the priest in Vånga write about her “working visa” in Denmark, but I believe that he was just slow to notice her disappearance. In 1873, the brother Ola immigrated to America, which must have made the priest realize her disappearance. Nothing speaks for her being back in Sweden that year. I now that she went from Asferg parish to Ålborg city 1871 as a house cleaner.

Magnus Peter Jensen

Now we set sail for Bornholm. In 1843, the girl Cecilia Margrethe Andersen married laborer Morten Jensen in Østermarie. They seem to have a fair life. Cecilia worked as a spinner, while Morten was a man of many talents: house owner, day laborer, worker, fisher and farmer. In 1846, they had their son Magnus Peter Jensen. He grew up with five siblings besides two twin sisters, who died as infants. The family struggled, since Bornholm was a special place in Denmark with many self-owned farms. It gave the households lots of freedom, but also a bad safety net. Magnus chose in 1864 to travel from the island, and he chose Mou parish in Ålborg through Nyker, Copenhagen, Korsør and Århus. He ended up on Høstemark (harvesting field). This is where he met the four year older Johanna Sofie Bengtsdotter, who arrived to the farm on the same day – November 1st 1866 – directly from Sweden. It is today Ny Høstemark and has the address Hjortevej. The farm was owned by lieutenant colonel and chamberlain Grüner, who had had built new farm buildings, drained parts of the land and planted the land. He needed many workers for that project. Johanna has most likely been a milkmaid, since the Swedish house cleaners mostly lived in the bigger towns. The job as a milkmaid was horrific. The work started as early as two in the “morning” and ended 7 in the evening only parted with one-hour lunch before dinner and after. On the big farms like Høstemark, the relations to the employer was non existing, so the servants took care of their own and developed hierarchies, where the milkmaid were placed in the bottom. They were considered promiscuous with bad sexual morality, since they were to sleep in the stables or on the fields next to the men. It caused many close relationships and unwanted pregnancies in the late nights all year around – whether those women had wanted the situation or not.

Around November 1867, Johanna and Magnus had a relationship, and in July 1868, the son Rosvald Jungby Stokflet Jensen was born in Årestrup parish far away from Mou. In the parent rubric in the ministerial book, it states: “Unmarried Johanna Sofie Bengtsdatter, lodger with skipper Nielsen’s widow in Torsted. Putative father bachelor Magnus Peter Jensen, serving Andersen on Kragelund, Haverslev parish.” In the comments, it states: “The child’s birth and baptism is registered for reverent Spleth, when the mother ten months before the birth lived in Haverslev. Her work book and a certificate from the child’s father is send, since he acknowledges the paternity.” Magnus had therefore found a new work place, too, and Johanne lived as a caregiver for an older woman during her pregnancy. A child was born into this world, but Johanna did not feel ready to take on the responsibility of motherhood, and Magnus was not capable of supporting a family yet. He acknowledged the paternity and let Rosvald have his last name, but the son was fostered by house owner Karen Marie Andersen in Årestrup his entire childhood.

Johanna went to Egholm in Ålborg Vor Frue parish on February 1st 1870 to work and is registered as an unmarried house cleaner and milkmaid from Sweden. She must have needed a break from the farms, but she returned to Mou and Høstemark on November 1871 the same time as Magnus, who had been in Haverslev. Although they had been separated work places for a year, they must have met in their time off, since Johanna in December 1871 gave birth to their shared daughter Caroline Henriette Jensen in Mou. Ten months before, Johanna had lived on Dalumgård in Suldrup parish. In time of the baptism (February 1972) Magnus was still on Høstemark, while Johanna served Peder Christen Bendixen in Skellet in Mou.

Hanna Nilsdotter

The Swedish Hanna Nilsdotter had a rough time in the new country with the many servants in the stables at night. On July 16th 1871, Hanna also lived with Peder Christen Bendixen just as Johanna did a few months before – maybe even in the same time. Hanna had become pregnant once again outside of marriage. The father was bachelor Christen Madsen from Høstemark, but the child was conceived in Ejstrup in Asferg parish. The putative father may have been seven years older, but still not ready to support a family, so Hanna stood – once again – with an illegitimate daughter in her hands. This time she was far away from any family and possible known caregivers, unless she was willing to lose the child completely. She therefore chose to keep her daughter this time.

All three of them meet

Johanna and Magnus stuck together, and it is possible that they had big plans to become a real family later on, when Magnus had made money enough. Without a doubt, Johanna had her hopes up since the birth of their first child together, to when she and Magnus third became pregnant; she was desperate for a provider. In September 1872, the daughter Mathilda Petra was conceived on Høstemark and born in June 1873 in Skellet. Magnus now worked on Frydenstrand. Everything could have worked out fine for Johanna if Magnus had not met Hanna Nilsdotter in Skellet February that same year – while Johanna was pregnant with Mathilde. Magnus and Hanna must have fell head over heels in love. Hanna gave birth to their shared daughter Thala in December 23rd 1873 and then Johanna was ditched and left to her own fate.

There is a lot to say about laborers such as Magnus Peter Jensen, and without a doubt has he exploited the weak Swedish milkmaids with very bad work conditions and no protection from the government, but Johanna and he have been a steady couple, so I doubt that he has forced himself on him. No more illegitimate children fathered by Magnus is found in the township. There was no birth control, and poor servants could not marry unexpectedly, even if they wanted to do “the right thing” in connection to a pregnancy. An economic fundament was necessary. He must have promised himself to Johanna, and I am not one to say for sure why he chose Hanna, but at least he tried his best to gather the family. Magnus and Hanna married in Mou January 31st 1874, and Hanna’s two and a half year old daughter Nielsine moved in with them, just like Johanna’s daughter Caroline was. Johanna’s other daughter Mathilde was fostered by crofter and bricklayer Christen Pedersen in Mou. Rosvald never returned to the family either.

What happed to Johanna Bengtsdotter has long been on my mind. In July 1876, she gave birth to yet another illegitimate child, the daughter Nielsine Severine Bentsen in Mou. The father was a laborer in Mou by the name Niels Severin Gustafson, a fellow Swede, but he leaves her. Nielsine is fostered by day laborer Jens Peter Pedersen in the parish and married in 1897 with seven children, before she died of pneumonia in 1905. Johanna therefore managed to have many descendants outside of Magnus, but the other children at least had a safe childhood with parents.

Magnus and Hanna

Hanna and Magnus moved a lot, but never outside of Ålborg. They had many children together, but when the daughter in 1894 was called Dusine (meaning no. 12), I wondered. Hanna had eight children with Magnus, and with her illegitimate child, it was 10. With Magnus’ illegitimates from Johanna, it makes it 13, so something is not right. It is possible that I have missed some children in the books, but the most likely explanation is this: Hanna never told Magnus about her little Karna in Sweden, and that makes Dusine number 12.

I want to point out that Karna had a lovely childhood. She grew up with her maternal grandparents and many maternal aunts and uncles. The uncle Ola has been in the US since 1871 and lived in Vasa, Goodhue, Minnesota in 1875. It was an area with many Scandinavians, and he had married Hulda from West Virginia. Ole must have told the family warm stories about the country, because in 1879 the brother Niels joined him, the next year the sister Bengta. In the year 1882, Ola’s parents – Hanna’s parents – decided to join as well with their little granddaughter Karna. This meant that Hanna was no longer just separated from the family by Øresund. Now there was a global ocean between them and the possibility of ever seeing her first born again disappeared completely. Perhaps these plans was the reason why Hanna saw no reason to tell Magnus about Karna. I do not know where Hanna’s family is buried, but I have an assumption about Karna marrying a Charley Wiberg with roots in Sweden as well. To complete the American history, the father of Hanna’s Danish daughter Nielsine, Christian Madsen, also moved to America in 1873 and married. In 1930, he was an 89-year-old widower in Wisconsin, and he too must have given up seeing his daughter as he left the country.
