Johanne's unhappy love story!

Christopher Ebbesen was born 1760 in Tødsø parish, Morsø Sønder in Thisted county. His last name ranges from Ebbesen and Evaldsen to Frandsen and Evensen, so it's hard to find relatives of him. We know that he was married 1793 to Maren Andersdatter Kjær, and that they had two daughters together in 1790 and 1794. After Maren's death in 1811, Christopher married Maren Madsdatter with whom he had a son in 1814 - at the age of 54. He was a pauper 1834-1840 and died 1850 at the age of 80. The daughter Johanne Christophersdatter did not have more luck. I must admit to have great pity toward her - perhaps more than I have for anyone else in my family tree.

Johanne was born on August 15th 1790 in Erslev town, Tødsø parish. In 1801 she was a child in Bjørndrup town, and in 1834 she was a housekeeper. She never married, but even so, she had six children. The first child was Anders in 1814, with a man by the same name in Tødsø. She was alone with him, and therefore needed a good salary to get through the day. In about 1825, she met Michel  Andersen from Lødderup who charmed his way into her life. He was the son of Anders Joensen (1752-1809) and Zidsel Pedersdatter (1755-1830) in Lødderup and had seven siblings, not lacking anything in life. Anders Joensen was a crofter and carpenter with land, and Zidsel ended her life as a pensioner at a son's farm. Michel himself grew up and married Anne Christensdatter in 1816, but the marriage did not stick, and she was already 44 years old at the wedding. Michel was a bricklayer master at a time when brick houses were a new style and extremely popular, and therefore he had the means to a good life like his parents. On January 12th 1825, Johanne gave birth to her daughter SidsenMarie Mikkelsdatter, and as the name indicates, Michel acknowledged the child.

The section for parents in the church book states: "The mother Johanne Christophersdatter, maid for smallholder Michel Andersen in Lødderup. Putative father is a person namely Michel, whose whereabouts could not be recalled. "Johannedid not dare to state Michel as the father, even though she was his maid! Perhaps she was terrified that she would lose her job? Anyway, the relationship grew. In 1828 she gave birth to my ancestor Ane Cathrine Mikkelsdatter, and the church book states:" The mother was the unmarried woman Johanne Christophersdatter. Putative father was lodger Michel Andersen or Johnsen in Lødderup for whom she keeps house - he is separated from his wife to bed and board." This means that he no longer received food from her or cohabitation with her. There is also a note in the book: "This is by the mother's explanation the third child which she has born out of wedlock." This remark is interesting. Up until 1812, it was illegal to have children out of wedlock, and still many parishes issued fines for mothers who had sinned the third time in this area. The priest was probably tired of Johanne, who repeatedly led her illegitimate children to baptism. Not only that, but the man was already officially married, and therefore children with Michel were per. definition bastards (when one of the parents is married with someone else). It was the worst status - much worse than being an illegitimate child.

In 1831, Johanne gave birth to their common son Peder Andreas, and the church book states: "Unmarried women Johanne Christophersdatter in Lødderup, putative father was day laborer Mikkel Andersen, who notified the birth. This is the fourth time he with this woman human being has committed adultery. " They even had their daughter Kirstine in 1833.

The priest's patience must have been worn out, and it even seems that they had another child together, Christian, but I do not find his birth. One can only speculate about how the priest responded to this! In 1834, Michel's legitimate wife lived in Lødderup alone as a tailor. Johanne had taken over the role of "housekeeper," and she remained housekeeper for Michel Andersen until his death in 1852. During the same time, he is listed as both lodger and master builder, both widowed and divorced. Whether his wife had died, or whether they eventually had divorced, I still need to find out, but at least it seems that he has taken Johanne in to his life without marrying her, prompting the consequences of his death: three years later, Johanne lived in the poorhouse in Lødderup as a pauper. None of Michel's family members took her in or helped the children. She had been a victim of irrational love.

From 1860, she lived with her daughter Ane Cathrine in Mjesing Skanderborg, who then had married Jakob Simonsen and had a reasonable existence, and when she died in Mjesing, the church book states: "Pauper in Lødderup, but has stayed in the county at the son in law Jacob Simonsen in Mjesing." If if wasn't for her daughter's (my ancestress') fortune, she would have died in the poorhouse.
